9 Skincare Mistakes That Are Easy To Avoid

Worried about skincare mistakes

Skincare mistakes – do you know they could ruin your skin?  But don’t worry, there are some easy ways to avoid them. Read on to learn more!

Skincare mistakes happen when people use techniques or products that aren’t right for their skin type. Sometimes causing dry, flaky, or irritated skin.   Some of these mistakes include using too much product, applying it in the wrong way, or buying products that contain harmful chemicals or are not right for their skin type.  In this article, we’ll show you what some of these common mistakes are and how to avoid them.

Dragging Down On Your Skin

Gravity is not our friend when it comes to our skin.  As we age everything seems to move downwards, eventually creating lines and droopy skin.  This process starts when we are in our 20s!  You can avoid this skincare mistake and help slow this down by using upward strokes when applying or removing your skincare products.  This also enables the product to get under those tiny facial hairs and penetrate the skin better.  The opposite applies when putting on your makeup.  For makeup, you should use downward strokes to smooth down those tiny facial hairs for a smooth complexion.  A good way to remember is upwards for skincare, and downwards for makeup.

Washing Your Face Too Often

If you wash your face too often, you might be washing away natural oils that keep your skin healthy. Washing your face too often also strips off the protective layer of cells, allowing dirt and bacteria to enter your pores. This can lead to breakouts and other issues.  Using a gentle oil-based cleanser at the end of the day, and a splash of fresh water in the morning is often enough.

Not Washing Your Face Properly

It’s not just washing your face that matters; you also need to cleanse your neck and chest as well. A good cleanser should remove makeup, dirt, and excess oils without leaving behind any residue.  It should also not leave your skin feeling tight and dry.

Moisturise With An Oil-Based Product

Oil-based moisturisers work by penetrating deep into the skin, where they help keep moisture locked in. They can also protect against environmental damage, such as wind and pollution.

It might seem counter-intuitive but using an oil-based moisturiser on oily skin helps stabilise the natural oils produced by the skin.  The Three Gems Frankincense Face Oil is ideal for oily or acne-prone skin.  Dry or mature skin is best with Neroli B Face Oil.

Using Too Much Oil or Cream

If you use too much oil or cream, you will end up with an oily-looking face, as the skin can only absorb so much. This can lead to clogged pores, acne breakouts, and even blackheads as the excess product can collect dirt and sweat on the surface of the skin.  Less is more when it comes to good quality skincare products.

Not Exfoliating

Our skin is constantly replacing itself.  As new cells come through, the older dead cells are shed.  A common skincare mistake is to leave these dead cells to just “fall off” naturally, which can result in dull-looking skin.  Brighten your complexion by showing the fresh new cells by exfoliating with something like a konjac sponge or a gentle, natural exfoliator.

Check out our post on how you can easily make your own exfoliator at home.

Over-Exfoliating

If you’re using an exfoliator, make sure you use one with natural ingredients. Many exfoliators contain harsh chemicals that can strip away your skin’s protective layer, causing dryness and irritation.  Some also contain microbeads that are not good for the environment, so check the ingredient list. Usually exfoliating once a week is a good rule of thumb.

It’s difficult to over-exfoliate using a natural konjac sponge as these are very gentle (but effective!) and contain no product that can remain on the skin.  Click here to find out the best way to use a konjac sponge.

Using Products That Are Too Hot or Cold

Another skincare mistake people often make when applying products is using too hot or cold temperatures. This can cause damage to your skin as well as irritate it.  Especially if you are prone to redness.  The heat will increase blood flow and make this problem worse. To prevent this, apply products at room temperature, and use tepid water when cleansing.

Using The Wrong Product For Your Skin

We are all very different.  What suits your best friend may not be right for you.  Whenever looking for a new skincare product it’s important to take into account your skin type and the skin problem you are looking to solve.  You should be able to talk to the retailer, supplier, or manufacturer to ask their advice about what is right for you.

Skin care products can be expensive, so it’s important to choose ones that will provide long-lasting results without causing irritation or other problems.
